Contextual Studdies: Jessica Jones
Televison shows like film, will use mataphors to covey hidden messages/underlying themes.
However is important to understand the diference between a metaphor and an anallergy.
-An allusion is a passing reference usually with no metaphorial intent. An analogy is a literal comparison without any further meaning e.g. "life is like a box of chocolates".
Jessica Jones is very suggestive with its metaphors. Including: Adiction (drugs and alcahol); child abuse; rape; stockholm syndrome (although manipulation and fear is a more prominant suggestion).
Child abuse: Trish is shown to be a passive character struggling to be more assurtive due to being abused as a child. This is the same with killgrave however he takes it much further.
Addiction: Jessica uses alcahol likley as a coping mechanism, she also has a friend who is a drug adict.
Former soldure simpson becomes adicted to pills that grant him advamced streangth. He takes them to feel less defenceless and like he is useful.
While chracters like Jessica and Trish may not seem to have much in common at first, it is suggested that they are both controll freaks.
Survailence: this is a big metaphor in the show, when we first meet jessic she is spying on other people. Trish has security cameras al over her flat. Killgrace has been watching jessica for a long time (often using other people to do it) and threatens her unless she sends him selfies (self survailance).
Other Visual Metaphors: In episode 2 Jessica finds a cocroach and it makes her think of kill grave, she is afraid at first and is reminded of killgrave ='s ability to survive, but by the end of teh episode she plucks up the courage to confront killgrave and crushes the cockroach.
There is a diference between static metaphors and dynamic metaphors.
-Static's are obvious and have a clear meaning.
-Dynamic's often develop meaning as the characters situation changes and can forshadow future/current events that may be shared by several characters.
365 movies - Most negative reviews about vulgarity etc. are most likely coming from the interracial coupling on the show, however, my grievance is one of acting, set design, dialogue and pacing of the script - nothing works. Strong female characters can be believable, if done right such as Beatrice Kiddo in Kill Bill. Krysten Ritter is simply not a good enough actor to carry the show. Her delivery seems like she JUST read the lines from a script and has something more interesting scheduled in her personal life, after the shoot. Also, dialogue such as the gem "Our marriage is over, we don't even do oral" makes you think how far removed the writers are from real life. This is no Daredevil and does not deserve its placement in the same universe. I just watched a few episodes and couldn't force myself anymore. A missed opportunity.
